The High Resolution Marine Seismic Acquisition Facility is headed by Dr. Andre Droxler and Dr. John Anderson. This facility has two portable PC based digital acquisition systems developed by Elics and are capable of collecting single (Delph1) and multi-channel (Delph2x) seismic. Typically it is operated from the University's 70' research vessel the Lone Star. Data acquired by these systems can either be (1) real time or post cruise processed, (2) raw data exported to SEGY and processed using ProMax, and (3) export processed SEGY data to the Photon SeisX seismic interpretation package.

The department also has a high-resolution land seismic acquisition system. This consists of a 60-channel Bison seismograph with a 120-channel cable and roll-along system for efficient multi-channel acquisition. Sources include Betsy seisgun (uses blank shotgun cartridges) and a system using rifle cartrides for higher frequencies. The Bison writes data to exabyte in the SEG-2 format which can then be imported by the ProMAX data processing package. More details are available from Dr. Alan Levander.

Photon SeisX seismic interpretation software package is a "windows" environment in a Unix OS loaded on a Silicon Graphics computer. SeisX is a useful tool for managing large data sets and enhancing data integration. Some of the advantages of SeisX are (1) the ability to interactively match phase, amplitude, and static shifts between several surveys of different vintages, and (2) interpret 2D and 3D surveys and well data on the same project.

ProMax is a seismic processing package running on an IBM/RS6000 with access available by any of the Unix workstations. This facility is headed by Dr. Alan R. Levander and Dr. Dale S. Sawyer. See Computer Facilities for more information on the computing facilities in the Department of Geology and Geophysics.
