Mount St. Helens Volcano
(Cascade Mountains, WA)
A one-day field trip to Mount
St. Helens is planned during the IODP
Workshop Addressing
Geologic Hazards Through Ocean Drilling Workshop, to examine the details of debris avalanche deposits and damage
resulting from volcano collapse that accompanied the May 18, 1980 eruption [Read more]. After
~20 years of quiescence, Mount St. Helens reawakened in September 2004,
producing intermittent steam and ash explosions [Read
more]. Activity at the volcano
has continued since 2004, slowly but steadily building a new lava dome inside
the volcano's crater. Further
information about past and present events at Mount St. Helens can be found at
the USGS/CVO
website.
More
details will be provided here about
field trip plans as they become available.
