Rice is the lead institution of the SE Caribbean Plate Boundary Continental Dynamics Project, which includes Principal Investigators at the University of Houston, University of Georgia, University of Arizona, the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego. 

The project, funded by NSF Continental Dynamics, will last from 2001-2005.

The project is being undertaken in cooperation with FUNVISIS, the Venezuelan Seismological Foundation, the Universidad Central de Venezuela, and the Universidad Simon Bolivar, with support from PDVSA/INTEVEP, Venezuelan petroleum companies.
