Web sites related to research at Rice Earth Science

There are a number of pages devoted to specific research projects, groups and/or locales within the Department. They range from the Computational Geophysics Research group to a site on Teaching in the Antarctic.

ISE'97 Web page logo
IberiaWeb. A set of pages covering the ISE'97 seismic project investigating the eastern margin of the North Atlantic along the Iberia pennisula to investigate the structure of a rifted margin, utilizing seismic reflection and refraction studies. Follow this link to learn more about ISE'97.

Glacier page logo
Glacier. A set of pages describing research and life in the Antarctic. Included are pages describing human life at the South pole, how the Antarctic ice sheets are formed and how they infulence climate, animal species found on the continent and more. Follow this link to learn more about Glacier.

Geochemistry page logo
Geochemistry lab. A set of pages describing the Geochemistry lab's research, personel, and goals. With the addition of one of our newest faculty member, Andreas Lüttge, the geochemistry lab has expanded into low-temperature aqueous geochemistry, specifically focusing on carbonate disolution and weathering processes. Follow this link to learn more about cutting edge Geochemistry research.

TEA logo
Teachers Experiencing Antarctica. A companion to Glacier, TEA is a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in which teachers are selected to travel to the Antarctic and the Arctic for a field season to participate in ongoing research. TEA is a partnership between teachers, researchers, students, the school district, and the community. Follow this link to learn more about TEA.

TEA logo
The SE Caribbean Plate Boundary Continental Dynamics Project is a multi-disciplinary investigation of the evolution of the complex Caribbean-South American Plate Boundary to test hypotheses of island arc accretion as a means of continental growth, and the mechanics of exhumation of HP/LT metamorphic rocks. Over 20 scientists at 7 US and 3 Venezuelan institutions are involved in the 4 year project. Investigations include geobarometry/thermometry, geochronology, structural and basin analysis, active and passive source seismic imaging of the crust and upper mantle, seismicity studies, and geodynamic modeling. Follow this link to learn more about the SE Caribbean Plate Boundary Project.

TEA logo
The Center for Computational Geophysics. was established to promote cross-disciplinary studies of the Earth requiring large computational resources. Comprised of faculty members from the Earth Science, Computational & Applied Mathematics, and Electrical & Computer Engineering Departments, the Center has research areas in petroleum, environmental, and academic seismology, lithosphere, whole mantle geodynamics, and fault mechanics. Follow this link to learn more abou the Center for Computational Geophysics.

Deep Probe logo
The Deep Probe seismic experiment is a joint US-Canadian project to investigate and contrast the structures of the Colorado Plateau and the Archean Medicine Hat block in Canada. 10 shots at 8 different sites were recorded in August 1995 using 2 deployments of 750 seismometers along a profile that extends from the US-Mexico border to the Great Slave Lake in Canada. Follow this link to learn more about Deep Probe.
