Research Interests
I am interested in physico-chemical processes of Earth and other planetary interiors with a particular emphasis on the role of melting in the differentiation and chemical evolution of the solid Earth. I apply experimental petrology and geochemistry to understand the processes in the interior of the planetary bodies, including those in the Earth's mantle. Many of my research projects employ high temperature, high pressure experimental laboratory tools such as piston cylinder and multi-anvil device and various micro analytical techniques to characterize the experiments. The objective is to determine, for example, solidus and liquidus temperatures of rocks at high pressures, the composition of partial melts formed at high pressures, and the partitioning behavior of major and key trace elements between minerals and melts.
One of my active areas of research is experimental study of the behavior and influence of C-O-H volatiles in mantle melting processes and igneous petrogenesis, with an aim to constrain the deep Earth volatile cycle. A new direction I am moving into is the study of core segregation during early planetary differentiation and core-mantle exchange relevant to the present day planetary interiors. A key focus is the behavior and role of various light elements in metal and metal-silicate equilibria.
I am seeking students and post-doctorates with interests in broad areas of petrology and high temperature geochemistry. Contact Rajdeep.Dasgupta-at-rice.edu for details.
